Project Description
Lateral support was required along the boundary of a new, high-end residential development in close proximity to neighbouring structures. Being prohibited from installing anchors underneath neighbouring properties, PeraGage designed an internally propped soldier pile and reinforced shotcrete lateral support system with a maximum retained height of 6.5m deep in cohesionless sands. Closely spaced CFA and forum bored piles were installed and supported using steel waler beams and props with internal heelblocks cast at the base of excavation level.
Project Tasks
- Temporary Lateral Support Design:
- Limit equilibrium and non-linear elastic analysis of lateral support.
- Pile shear and moment capacity.
- Steel calculations for waler beams and internal propping with CHS sections.
Project Results
The project involved a combination of bored piles and CFA (Continuous Flight Auger) piles, selected based on the prevailing geological conditions. Once the perimeter piles were installed, they were braced with walers and internal props, which were anchored to the heel blocks. Prior to casting the heelblocks, the excavated section was compacted to minimize horizontal movement and limit deflections on neighbouring structures.
