Project Description
The project involved the design of piles and lateral support for an upscale dwelling in Plettenberg Bay, with a specific focus on providing temporary lateral support with a permanent wall. Starting from the tender design phase, the project extended to detailed design and construction oversight.
This includes designing temporary lateral support for a permanent wall, integrating pile design into the building’s foundation system, and ensuring construction adherence to the specified design.

Project Tasks
- Permanent Lateral Support Design:
- Limit equilibrium and non-linear elastic analysis of lateral support.
- Pile shear and moment capacity for permanent support.

Project Results
The project consisted of 126 lateral support piles with 103 foundation piles. Lateral support consisted of cantilever piles and piles with additional tie-back anchors in the form of self-drilling anchors connected to waler beams. The lateral support was installed to the design specifications and experienced minimal movement over the course of construction. The project was successfully completed ahead of program.
