Project Description
The Oxford Office development is situated in the Rosebank Johannesburg and consisted of a 3-level basement excavation up to a depth of 12m. The site was divided into two portions with active support provided for excavation depths more than 10m and a passive system where the wall is shallower than 10m. The active system consisted of 600mm diameter soldier piles anchored back using strand anchors. The passive support consisted of a conventional soil nail wall with 200mm thick shotcrete. The post-tensioned anchors had to be positioned in such a way as not to encroach on the Gautrain servitude which runs along the western boundary of the site.
Project Tasks
Design of lateral support:
- Contiguous pile wall analysis with tiebacks
- Pile design and structural analysis
- Shotcrete design and structural analysis
Design of foundation piles:
- Pile group analysis to obtain individual pile loads
- Pile design and structural analysis for individual piles
- Pile geotechnical capacity design
Project Results
The project was successfully carried out by the contractors with minimal design changes.
